About Us

Welcome to Gordon Gilchrist Ltd!   . . . . . .   The muck shifting specialists!

We are a thriving company based in Banbridge, Co. Down, Northern Ireland. While we specialise in muck shifting, we also have numerous contracts ongoing in the general Belfast area providing general haulage and tipper work, and also supplying sand, stones, gravel, and soil to many sites.

Our company was establishment in 1995. Since then we have worked hard to earn a reputation for reliability, efficiency and excellence. We are now well known for our muck shifting and we are delighted to find that our services are sought far and wide for this and our quarry work too.

It is easy for terms like “No job is too big or too small” to trip off the tongue, but when it comes to muck shifting, excavating and ground works, we really believe here at Gordon Gilchrist Ltd we have few equals!

Our staff are qualified and we have invested heavily in state-of-the-art equipment to be able to deal with any job. While most of our work is concentrated in the general Belfast area, we are also well known over all of Northern Ireland. Recently we have also carried out many jobs in the South of Ireland too.

With our premises just outside of Banbridge, right on the convenient A1 dual carriageway,  we are ideally located to carry out work on both sides of the Border.

Short History of our company.

Gordon, himself a qualified mechanic, grew up surrounded by trucks and machinery with his father William and his uncles Sam and Sandy owning a block-making company in Banbridge called Samuel Gilchrist Block Manufacturers.

He was always around trucks as a youngster so it was inevitable that he would end up working with them. He served his time as a mechanic and went on to set up the business as it is now. This is a decision he hasn’t regretted.

Gordon Gilchrist Ltd has grown steadily over the years and now boasts a fleet of 10 tipper trucks as well as an extensive range of ground works equipment, including low-loaders, bulldozers and diggers. Gordon has invested heavily in equipment and not long ago bought six new trucks, a new mini-digger and a new tractor and trailer.

Our new trucks comprise three Volvo FM400 8×4 Tippers, complete with Thompson Loadmaster and PM Onboard Weighing Systems, two Hino and a digger. As a big fan of Volvo his fleet consists of  Volvo, DAF, and also Hino, having found these brands to be very reliable too. Trucks are upgraded every couple of years to make sure they are in the best of condition, with the drivers themselves having a say in what they drive.

Happy Clients.

Our customers include such reputable companies as John McQuillan Contracts (Belfast), William Cross Contractor, Graham’s of Dromore, McAvoy Construction, TJ Shields (Ballynahinch), Leslie Wright, Newtownards and Tom Earney, Lisburn to name but a few. We have an eight-wheel truck permanent in Tullyraine Quarries in Banbridge and a six-wheeler in Edentrillick Quarries in Dromore. We also works for Budore Quarries in Belfast.

Since the early days of the development of the Titanic Quarter in Belfast in 2006, we have been involved in several jobs in the area. We recently carried out a major muck shifting contract for Thompson Recycle Oils after an oil spillage at The Quarter.

Other typical types of work include being contracted by TJ Shields to carry out work on the West Link and M1 upgrade in Belfast. We also worked on the A1 Sprucefield to Beech Hill Bypass for Brian Herron Contracts, which was the first phase of the main Belfast to Dublin route starting at the M1 motorway.

Licences.

We hold both a waste carrier licence and a waste permit licence. Unlike in the Republic of Ireland where such licences can only be used in the area they have been granted, our’s can be used in any part of the UK.

Despite rising fuel and insurance costs hitting the haulage industry in particular, we nevertheless are looking to the future with much upbeat optimism.
